Are you eligible for CISSP?

CISSP validates broad security judgment across governance and risk, asset security, architecture, networks, identity, assessment, operations and secure software development. It suits experienced practitioners, engineers, architects, consultants, GRC professionals and security leaders.

Full CISSP

Five cumulative years of paid, full-time experience in two or more domains. One eligible degree or approved credential can waive one year.

Associate pathway

You can still take the exam, then earn the required experience within six years as an Associate of ISC2.

There is no experience gate to sit for the exam; the experience requirement is for the full credential. Part-time work and internships may count. Verify your role against the official experience requirements.

Career outcome

What changes after you become certified?

CISSP is commonly requested for security engineer, architect, consultant, GRC manager, security manager, security program manager, information assurance manager and director/CISO-track roles. It can open senior-level conversations, but it does not guarantee a particular salary increase.

A realistic ROI view

Compensation depends on location, industry, clearance, role scope and experience. Use current openings plus ISC2’s salary guidance to benchmark your market.

Hiring spans government and defense, consulting, finance, healthcare, technology, cloud providers and other regulated enterprises. Search a target job title plus “CISSP preferred” or “CISSP required” to see current local employers.

Exam experience

What will the test actually look like?

Three hours maximum

Breaks are allowed but use exam time.

100–150 items

The total depends on CAT stopping rules.

Beyond multiple choice

May include calculation, ordering, hotspots and scenarios.

CISSP is computer-delivered at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers, not through at-home proctoring. It is generally offered year-round by local capacity. Current languages include English, Chinese, German, Japanese and Spanish; simplified Chinese has limited appointment windows. Check the official format details.

Budget

What does it cost, and how many attempts are included?

The standard fee is currently US$749 in the Americas, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, and other regions not separately listed. ISC2 lists EUR 719.04 for EMEA and GBP 606.69 for the United Kingdom. Pricing and taxes depend on the exam location, so confirm the total through ISC2’s live price list.

Standard CISSP registration$749£606.69€719.04
Reschedule$50£35€40

A normal registration covers one attempt. A retake needs another paid attempt unless you purchase a package that specifically includes two attempts.

Retake wait periods

30 test-free days after attempt one; 60 after attempt two; 90 after attempt three and later.

Attempt limit

Up to four attempts per certification program in a 12-month period.

ISC2 does not publish a percentage-correct pass mark. The pass standard is 700 on a 1,000-point scale.

Book confidently

When, where and how do you schedule?

Choose the location, date and time from available Pearson VUE appointments. It is not a single set of global exam sittings—availability is based on local center capacity.

  1. Create or sign in to your ISC2 account.
  2. Purchase the CISSP exam and ensure your account name matches your government identification.
  3. Continue to Pearson VUE, choose a center, date and time, then confirm.
  4. Review identification, arrival and cancellation requirements.

Use ISC2’s current scheduling instructions. You receive a provisional pass or fail at the test center. A passing result begins ISC2’s endorsement process; a failing result is not a certificate.

Tip: book early when you need a particular date, city or test language.

Preparation

How long should you prepare, and what should you use?

Most working professionals need 10–16 weeks, or roughly 120–200 focused hours, based on their experience across the eight domains. Candidates new to several domains should give themselves more time.

Build the map

Use the official outline and one trusted study guide or course.

Practice decisions

Learn why one business-aware answer is best in a scenario.

Review misses

Maintain an error log, then focus review on weak domains.

Books, lectures, videos and official ISC2 training can all work. Start with our 90-day study plan, then use the domain study hub for targeted practice.

Testing strategy

How does adaptive testing work?

Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) chooses the next item based on prior responses to estimate your competence across the blueprint. It does not merely become harder after every correct response.

The exam ends when the system can determine pass or fail with its required confidence, when you reach 150 items, or when time expires. You cannot return to earlier questions. Finishing at 100 does not by itself mean pass or fail.

The right goal: make the best security decision on every item.

Manage time, read the scenario and qualifiers carefully, and use ISC2’s CAT guide for the official details.
