CISSP Exam Cost 2026: Fees, Retakes, and a Realistic Total Budget

The standard CISSP examination fee is US$749 in the Americas, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and other regions not priced separately. ISC2 currently lists regional prices of €719.04 in EMEA and £606.69 in the United Kingdom. Taxes and the currency charged can depend on the location where the exam is administered, so the final amount shown during registration is authoritative.

What the CISSP Exam Fee Includes

The registration fee buys one examination attempt delivered through an authorized Pearson testing center. It does not include a training course, study guide, practice-question subscription, retake, endorsement service, or future annual maintenance fees. There is no lower-priced “exam only” tier because the listed price already represents the exam-only purchase.

After purchase, you schedule the appointment from the Courses and Exams area of your ISC2 account. Make sure your account name exactly matches the identification you will present. A mismatch can prevent admission and may cause you to lose the fee.

Rescheduling, Cancellation, and Retake Costs

Pearson currently charges US$50 to reschedule and US$100 to cancel, with corresponding regional charges shown above. ISC2 instructs candidates to make changes before the applicable deadline. A late cancellation or no-show can put the full exam fee at risk.

A failed attempt does not include a free retake. Budget for another full exam registration unless your purchase specifically includes an official limited-time retake offer. Promotional policies change, so do not assume a second attempt is included merely because an older forum post describes one.

The least expensive strategy is therefore not to schedule as soon as you begin studying. Schedule once your mixed-domain performance is stable, you can complete a timed adaptive-style session, and you consistently explain why each distractor is wrong. Our CISSP mock test can help expose readiness gaps before they become a US$749 lesson.

The Cost After You Pass

Passing the exam is not the final certification step. You must complete the endorsement process and meet the experience requirement. Once certified, ISC2 members holding CISSP pay a US$135 Annual Maintenance Fee. Members with multiple qualifying ISC2 certifications pay one member AMF rather than a separate AMF for each credential.

CISSP holders must also earn 120 continuing professional education credits during the three-year certification cycle. CPE activity does not have to be expensive: webinars, professional reading, presentations, volunteer work, and other qualifying activities may provide low-cost paths. Still, travel, conferences, or paid courses can increase your long-term budget.

How Much Should You Budget in Total?

A disciplined self-study candidate can keep the direct pre-exam budget close to the registration fee by using the official exam outline, existing books, free study resources, and a focused question bank. A practical baseline budget is:

  • Lean self-study: US$749 plus any applicable tax, using free or already-owned resources.
  • Structured self-study: roughly US$850–$1,200 after adding current books, practice tools, and optional video instruction.
  • Instructor-led preparation: potentially several thousand dollars, depending on the provider and whether an exam voucher is bundled.

Training is optional. Paying more can buy structure, feedback, and accountability, but it does not replace experience or careful review. Before purchasing a course, confirm whether its advertised price includes an exam voucher, whether that voucher expires, and whether a retake option has specific eligibility conditions.

Ways to Avoid Wasting the Exam Fee

  1. Use the current outline. Build your plan around the eight domains and their current weights, not an old book’s chapter order.
  2. Budget for judgment practice. CISSP questions reward risk-based, managerial decisions, not isolated recall.
  3. Delay scheduling until readiness is measurable. A calendar deadline can motivate you, but an arbitrary deadline can also create an unnecessary retake.
  4. Read voucher conditions. Confirm expiration, transferability, cancellation rules, and what happens after a no-show.
  5. Protect the appointment. Check identification requirements, route, arrival time, and test-center instructions in advance.

If you are ready to turn the budget into a study schedule, follow the 90-day CISSP study plan, then review the current CISSP exam format before booking.
